The month of May is upon us. It’s time to get out of the house and enjoy what the Chicago area has to offer! Here are a few ideas for activities in the Chicago area that are both enjoyable and informative for seniors, as well as the other members of your family.
From now until May 21, the iconic painting Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (Portrait of the Artist’s Mother) — much better known as “Whistler’s Mother”— will be on display at the Art Institute of Chicago. The painting arrived to the Institute in March, returning to Chicago for the first time in more than 60 years. Painted in 1871, the portrait of Anna McNeill Whistler is considered to be a beloved masterpiece in America, but the truth is that it has rarely been seen in the United States. Here’s an opportunity to see it in person!
On May 3 at Noon, head over to the Frisbie Senior Center in DesPlaines for a Senior Health Talk on diabetic care. The talk will cover many subtopics, including foot care — a vitally important issue for those who have diabetes.
Starting at 9 a.m. on May 4, The Mainstreet Organization of Realtors will be holding their Senior Expo. Seminars will highlight topics such as senior fraud prevention, decluttering one’s home, and preparing for the future. Door prizes and refreshments will be available. Visit the organization’s website or its Arlington Heights office for more information.
From Noon to 3 p.m. on May 6, celebrate Founder’s Day in Downers Grove at the Downers Grove Museum’s free event, “Country in the Park.” See and pet farm animals, play games from a long-lost era, watch a blacksmith at work, and more! Visit their website for more details.
Also on May 6, the north end of Springfield Park will be the location for the Bloomingdale Garden Club’s Annual Flower and Plant Sale! There you will find perennials, annuals, vegetables, and flowers galore! Master gardeners will be on hand to answer any questions you might have. Click the links to learn more!
On May 6 and 7, more than 125 artists will gather for the 21st annual Art In Wilder Park. Browse a variety of arts and crafts, including jewelry, photography, and sculptures. The Elmhurst Trolley will be running on both days, and Café Amano will be hosting upscale dining! Click the links for more information.
If, as the old saying goes, April showers really bring May flowers, then this is the month to get out and “smell the roses.” Enjoy some of these Chicago area activities with your loved ones today!
